Wokingham is a spread out borough and travel time matters. A carer stuck in traffic on the A329 is a carer who arrives late, so we build rotas around geography rather than hoping for the best.

Worth knowing: a lot of Wokingham borough has a Reading postal address. Woodley, Earley, Twyford, Charvil, Wargrave and Shinfield all say Reading on the envelope but are Wokingham for social care. If you have been going round in circles with Reading Borough Council, that is probably why.

For anything urgent it is the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. Wokingham has no A and E.
What Wokingham does have, and Reading does not, is a proper community hospital with rehabilitation beds. Wokingham Community Hospital on Barkham Road is run by Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and has two wards used for rehabilitation and physiotherapy after a stay. Parking is free and it is a short walk from the station, which matters when you are visiting every day.
The same site houses the Barkham Clinic, home to the memory service and older adults mental health services. If a memory assessment has been mentioned, that is where it happens.
There is also a home based Intermediate Care Service for Wokingham, arranged through a GP or hospital professional.
Age UK Berkshire runs a free Home from Hospital service specifically for Wokingham borough residents for the first few weeks after discharge: food shopping, light housework, collecting medication, talking to the ward. If you are arranging care in a hurry after a discharge call, that service is worth knowing about and costs nothing.
Local support in the area
Age UK Berkshire covers Wokingham. There is no separate Age UK Wokingham.
Dementia Friendly Wokingham is a partnership between Age UK Berkshire, Understanding Dementia and The Link Visiting Scheme, backed by the council, and it is the best single starting point for dementia support in the borough. There is also a Dementia Care Advisory Service for anyone in the borough with a diagnosis.
There are dementia cafes across the borough: a long running Alzheimer's Cafe at the Methodist church on Rose Street, and Age UK Berkshire cafes at Finchampstead, Earley and Charvil. The Link Visiting Scheme runs Active Minds, a structured group for people with early memory problems, and you can refer yourself.
The WADE Day Centre on Reading Road has been going for years. Qualified carers, a cooked lunch, physiotherapy, chiropody and hairdressing on site, and importantly it offers day respite so a family carer gets a break. It runs its own wheelchair accessible minibuses across the borough. Earley Day Centre on Kenton Road is a free drop in.
The Link Visiting Scheme is a Wokingham charity tackling loneliness in older people, with hundreds of volunteers doing one to one befriending. You can refer yourself from sixty. They also coordinate the Friendship Alliance, which lists dozens of friendship tables across the borough, and that listing is the most useful single page in Wokingham for finding something local and social.
For transport, Keep Mobile is the dial a ride for Wokingham and Bracknell Forest, open to anyone disabled at any age or anyone over seventy. Wokingham Volunteer Centre runs a community car scheme where the volunteer driver stays with you for the whole appointment, which is a real kindness at a hospital clinic.

Commonly Asked Questions About Home Care in Wokingham
Which areas of Wokingham do you cover?
Wokingham town, Winnersh, Woosehill, Emmbrook, Barkham, Finchampstead, Twyford, Wargrave, Charvil, Hurst, Woodley, Earley, Shinfield, Arborfield, Spencers Wood and the villages between.
My address says Reading but I think I am in Wokingham. Which is it?
If you are in Woodley, Earley, Twyford, Charvil, Wargrave, Shinfield or Arborfield, you are almost certainly Wokingham Borough for social care, whatever the envelope says. Check your full postcode or ring us.
Can you help after a stay at Wokingham Community Hospital?
Yes. We often pick up when someone comes off one of the rehabilitation wards and still needs support at home. Ask the ward to include us in the discharge plan.
Does the council pay for home care in Wokingham?
Possibly. Start with a needs assessment from the Health and Social Care Hub, which anyone can request. The financial assessment comes afterwards.
Do you cover the villages, or just the town?
The villages too. Travel time is the thing that makes or breaks village care, so we are honest at the outset about what we can reliably staff.
How quickly can care start in Wokingham?
Usually within a few days, and sometimes the same day in an urgent situation. We will always tell you honestly what we can do rather than promise and let you down.
How much does home care cost in Wokingham?
Visiting care starts from £18.18 per visit and live in care from £1,125 per week. Where you sit within our range depends on the tasks involved and the level of support needed. We tell you the exact price in writing at the free initial meeting, before anything starts. See our pricing page for the detail.
Are you CQC registered?
Yes. Apex Healthcare Services is registered with the Care Quality Commission and currently rated Good. We serve Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell, Newbury, Ascot and Maidenhead.
