Which council you deal with, and please read this bit

SL5 is split between two councils, and which one you get depends on your full postcode.

SL5 8, which is most of North Ascot, is Bracknell Forest Council. Adult social care on 01344 351500.

SL5 0, SL5 5, SL5 7 and SL5 9, which is Ascot itself, Sunninghill, South Ascot and Sunningdale, is the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Adult social care on 01628 683744, and the team is called the Front Door team.

This is not a technicality. A family in North Ascot who reads "your council is the Royal Borough" and rings Maidenhead will be told they have the wrong authority, and they will have lost a week. It happens constantly.

If you are unsure, check your full postcode on your council's website, or ring us and we will look it up with you. It takes thirty seconds and we do it most weeks.

Coming home from hospital

Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot is for planned care only. It has no A and E. This matters. It is a modern hospital on your doorstep with operating theatres and inpatient beds, run by Frimley Health, and a lot of people assume it is where you go in an emergency. It is not. For A and E it is Wexham Park in Slough or Frimley Park.

If your operation is at Heatherwood, that is good news for recovery at home. It is close, and family can visit easily.

For rehabilitation after a hospital stay, Henry Tudor Ward at St Mark's Hospital in Maidenhead is the short stay inpatient rehabilitation unit, run by Berkshire Healthcare. King Edward VII Hospital in Windsor is a shared site running a range of outpatient and community services.

One thing to be clear about: there is no minor injuries unit at King Edward VII, whatever older leaflets say. Do not set off there with a suspected fracture.

Local support in the area

Alzheimers Dementia Support, known locally as ADS, is an independent charity covering Windsor, Maidenhead, Ascot and Slough. It is not the Alzheimer's Society, it is its own organisation, and it runs regular seated exercise and singing sessions in Ascot at King Edwards Hall.

Age UK Berkshire hosts an Ascot memory morning at St Michael's Church Hall and a dementia friendly cafe at the Royal Foresters, and there is a monthly dementia friendly walk at Royal Ascot Golf Club with a wheelchair accessible route. There is a warm welcome group for the over fifty fives at TRAX in North Ascot, with help available for transport.

If you have a dementia diagnosis and live on the Royal Borough side, the Dementia Care Advisors are your point of contact. They are delivered by Optalis on behalf of the council, which is why you may see both names.

The Ascot District Day Centre at the top of Sunninghill High Street has been running for over forty years, with around eighty five members and more than thirty volunteers, and it runs its own minibus collecting from North and South Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale. It is the long standing institution for older people in this area. It is currently running four days a week rather than five because of a driver shortage, so ring before you go.

There is also a carers coffee club for Ascot and Sunningdale carers at a care home in Sunningdale.

For transport, Ascot Volunteer Bureau is the hyperlocal one: volunteer drivers taking older residents in SL5 to medical appointments, in their own cars, waiting or coming back for you. People to Places is the borough wide dial a ride and Shopmobility service, running since 1989.
