    Where we work

Areas we cover in and around Maidenhead

Maidenhead town, Boyn Hill, Cox Green, Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green, North Town, Altwood, Braywick, Oldfield, Belmont, Woodlands Park, and out to Bray, Holyport, Cookham, Cookham Dean, Cookham Rise, White Waltham, Hurley, Littlewick Green, Burchett's Green, Touchen End and Waltham St Lawrence.

    Postcodes: SL6, plus parts of SL4, SL7 and RG10.

    Which council you deal with

Adult social care is the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, and the team is the Front Door team on 01628 683744. There is an online referral form on the council's social care portal, and the offices are at the Town Hall on St Ives Road.

Maidenhead has the most tangled postcode boundaries in Berkshire, so this is worth two minutes of your time.

Taplow has a Maidenhead SL6 address but is Buckinghamshire Council, not the Royal Borough. Bisham has a Marlow SL7 address but is the Royal Borough. Datchet and Horton have Slough SL3 addresses but are the Royal Borough. Waltham St Lawrence has a Reading RG10 address but is the Royal Borough.

If you are in any of those, the address on your bills is a poor guide to who arranges your care. Check the postcode or ask us.

Out of hours it is the shared Berkshire Emergency Duty Service on 01344 351 999.

    After a hospital stay

    Coming home from hospital

For A and E it is Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, run by Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. Heatherwood in Ascot handles planned surgery and has no emergency department.

St Mark's Hospital on St Mark's Road is Maidenhead's community hospital, and it is a shared site. Berkshire Healthcare runs Henry Tudor Ward, a short stay rehabilitation ward, along with an assessment and rehabilitation centre and a range of outpatient services. Frimley Health runs its own outpatient clinics there. Parking is currently free.

Please note there is no longer a minor injuries unit at St Mark's. It closed during the pandemic and has not reopened. The nearest Berkshire Healthcare minor injuries unit is now at West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham, which is a long way. For anything urgent it is Wexham Park. Older leaflets and some websites still say otherwise, and that is the kind of mistake that matters when somebody has had a fall.

The memory clinic covering Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead is in the town centre at Nicholson Walk, on GP referral.

Hospital discharge in the Royal Borough is handled by a named Hospital Social Work Team, working to a home first approach, and short term reablement after illness or injury is delivered through Optalis.

    The wider picture

    Local support in the area

Names are genuinely confusing here, so to be clear about who is who.

Alzheimers Dementia Support, known as ADS, is an independent local charity based on Queen Street with a shop on the High Street. It is not the Alzheimer's Society. It covers Windsor, Maidenhead, Ascot and Slough and runs regular groups.

Age UK Berkshire is the Age UK branch covering Maidenhead, and publishes a Windsor and Maidenhead programme of activities each month. Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East is a different charity with several shops in Maidenhead, though its day centre is over in Old Windsor.

If you have a dementia diagnosis, the Dementia Care Advisors are the point of contact, delivered by Optalis for the council. They run free monthly support groups with speakers, including one specifically for Black, Asian and minority ethnic families with information available in Urdu.

Elizabeth House in Cookham has been running since 1981 and is the long standing day centre for the Cookhams: freshly cooked lunch, chair exercise, quizzes, a theatre club, a chiropodist and a hairdresser on site. Around two hundred members and sixty volunteers.

For transport, People to Places is the Royal Borough's dial a ride and Shopmobility charity, running since 1989, with Shopmobility in both Maidenhead and Windsor. Worth knowing: the council does not arrange hospital transport, so for an appointment you contact the clinic directly. And there is a blue badge drop in clinic at the Town Hall every Thursday morning, which saves a lot of form filling.

Common questions about home care in Maidenhead

Where is the nearest A and E to Maidenhead?

Wexham Park Hospital in Slough. Heatherwood in Ascot is planned care only and St Mark's is a community hospital with no emergency department.

Is there still a minor injuries unit at St Mark's?

No. It closed during the pandemic and has not reopened. For anything urgent go to Wexham Park.

Which areas of Maidenhead do you cover?

The town including Boyn Hill, Cox Green, Furze Platt, Pinkneys Green, North Town and Oldfield, plus Bray, Holyport, Cookham, White Waltham, Hurley and the villages around.

I live in Taplow. Is that Maidenhead?

For your post, yes. For adult social care, no. Taplow is Buckinghamshire Council. It is a common and time consuming mix up.

Can you help after a stay on Henry Tudor Ward?

Yes. Coming off a rehabilitation ward is one of the moments where home care makes the most difference, because the gains made in therapy are easy to lose in the first fortnight at home.

Does the council pay for home care in Maidenhead?

It may. Ring the Royal Borough Front Door team on 01628 683744 and ask for a needs assessment.

How quickly can care start in Maidenhead?

Usually within a few days, and sometimes the same day in an urgent situation. We will always tell you honestly what we can do rather than promise and let you down.

How much does home care cost in Maidenhead?

Visiting care starts from £18.18 per visit and live in care from £1,125 per week. Where you sit within our range depends on the tasks involved and the level of support needed. We tell you the exact price in writing at the free initial meeting, before anything starts. See our pricing page for the detail.

    Are you CQC registered?

Yes. Apex Healthcare Services is registered with the Care Quality Commission and currently rated Good. We serve Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell, Newbury, Ascot and Maidenhead.
